The Health Minded Consumer and the Evolution of Food for Wellness
9:00 AM - 9:30 AM
9:00 AM
9:30 AM

It’s no secret that consumers are focused on health and wellness when purchasing products across the store. The struggle against ailments, aging, and sustainability are real, and Americans are fighting back with their food dollars. As a result, clean label foods, perimeter fresh departments, homeopathic remedies, functional beverages and plant-based household cleaners are growing.

As chronic disease and ailments become more of a focus, and as sufferers determine the best approach for managing their conditions, it will become increasingly important for the industry to understand this consumer. Because the ailment management process involves the total store, retailers and manufacturers have an opportunity to engage with this consumer not only in the pharmacy and over-the-counter medication sections, but in the food aisles as well.

Best Practices in Food Retail Health/Wellness/Fresh: Focus on Family Meals
1:30 PM - 2:00 PM
1:30 PM
2:00 PM

Why should family meals be recovered and supported? Numerous studies have found that "eating with others, particularly family, is associated with healthier dietary outcomes" for both children and adults. Consumers are looking to the food and beverage industry for solutions that enable them to navigate the challenges they experience as immutable (fragmented schedules, fragmented tastes or solitary living). RDs can emphasize how their stores are beneficial by providing more convenient at-home meal preparations, options more consistent with the disparate desires of the family’s children and adults, and portions and preparations more aligned with smaller families.

The Impact of Registered Dietitians in Nutrition Marketing through Multiple Communication Channels
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM
4:30 PM
5:00 PM

It’s not surprising that annual medical costs in the United States were 3.3 trillion dollars in 2016 with statistics like these: Sixty-three percent of Americans decide what to eat less than an hour before dinner. Americans also spend over half of their food expenditures on food away from home.

Planning ahead and preparing meals at home used to be common skills, but today, less than a third of people of people cook at home. The time it requires to plan, procure and prepare a meal has been reported as the number one reason for lack of meal prepping.

The use of Registered Dietitians (RDs) to educate, empower and promote a healthier lifestyle by providing tips and resources has a large impact on consumer choices in retail settings. Today’s technology allows for educating customers in many ways, as 80% of people that use the internet use it for health information.

Nutrition messages can be marketed and communicated through social and digital media, print literature and television segments in order promote positive behavior change and increase sales in retail settings. RDs are the experts when it comes to giving concise, direct and catchy nutrition messages.
